Get into Genes is a joint initiative of the Australian Centre for Plant Functional Genomics Pty Ltd (ACPFG) and the Molecular Breeding Cooperative Research Centre (MPBCRC). As well as conducting publicly funded, commercially focused research, both organisations have education programs that aim to:

  • increase secondary school student understanding
of the applications of gene technology to plant breeding and crop improvement so that they can become informed decision makers within the community; and
  • stimulate interest in science-based careers.

The Australian Centre for Plant Functional Genomics conducts commercially driven research that will offer
direct benefits to Australian farmers. In fact – we are
aiming to ‘take the stress out of agriculture' with the development of technologies that will enable the
creation of superior wheat and barley varieties.
These varieties will have increased tolerance to
stresses such as drought, salinity, mineral
deficiencies and toxicities.

Molecular Plant Breeding Cooperative Research Centre has 200 researchers, both throughout Australia and overseas, developing safer and more nutritious pastures for livestock production, and wheats and barleys with excellent quality and resistance to disease. We are working to develop molecular marker and genetic engineering technologies to put plant breeding into fast forward, and to deliver them to farmers through cereal and pasture improvement programs.
